PHS Boys Basketball

Coach Dave Boyce

dboyce@perrysburgschools.net

Our camps will be structured to build from the very basic skills in the 1-4 camps; to more complex skills in the grades 5-6 camp; to a practice like setting for grades 7-8-9. More team concepts will be introduced as the players advance, while the younger players will learn more about the rules and set-up of the game. We will teach shooting form, ball handling, and passing, team play, rebounding techniques, defensive basics, and full-court play. Each of these fundamentals will be drilled daily and coached for reinforcement. Perhaps, as important, we will teach and stress proper court attitude - respecting referees, being a team player, handling missed shots and being a good winner. Each camper will get a chance to play a lot of basketball, learn about this great game and have lots of fun! Visit the Boys Basketball link on the Perrysburg Athletics website for registration forms & more information.

For readers between the ages of 7 and 10, a book club just for you!
Join the Mischief Makers for a discussion of "Bob" on Monday, June 4 at 6 pm.
It’s been five years since Livy and her family have visited Livy’s grandmother in Australia. Now that she’s back, Livy has the feeling she’s forgotten something really, really important about Gran’s house.
It turns out she’s right.
Bob, a short, greenish creature dressed in a chicken suit, didn’t forget Livy, or her promise. He’s been waiting five years for her to come back, hiding in a closet like she told him to. He can’t remember who—or what—he is, where he came from, or if he even has a family. But five years ago Livy promised she would help him find his way back home. Now it’s time to keep that promise.
Clue by clue, Livy and Bob will unravel the mystery of where Bob comes from, and discover the kind of magic that lasts forever.
Wendy Mass and Rebecca Stead, two masterminds of classic, middle-grade fiction come together to craft this magical story about the enduring power of friendship.

It is called Los Alamos, and it is abuzz with activity, as scientists and mathematicians from all over America and Europe work on the biggest secret of all--"the gadget." None of them--not J. Robert Oppenheimer, the director of the Manhattan Project; not the mathematicians and scientists; and least of all, Dewey--know how much "the gadget" is about to change their lives.

Book Release: The History of Karate and the Masters Who Made It

Gathering Volumes

Denise Phillips

denise@gatheringvolumes.com

Gathering Volumes is pleased to welcome Mark Cramer to the store to celebrate the release of "The History of Karate and the Masters Who Made It: Development, Lineages, and Philosophies of Traditional Okinawan and Japanese Karate-do"
About the Book: The first concise yet comprehensive history of traditional Okinawan and Japanese karate includes authoritative biographies of the great karate masters of the past and the philosophical issues they faced as karate changed and evolved. Bringing a fresh understanding to the study of the martial arts, Mark I. Cramer dispels many of the often-repeated martial arts myths as he details the lineages of the modern styles of karate and describes the social, cultural, and political events that influenced them. While most books focus on a single style of karate or the biography of just one of the great teachers, this book offers a well-researched and detailed overview. By bringing all of this knowledge together in one volume, Cramer--who has trained and competed in karate for more than forty years, as well as won numerous awards and been inducted into the USA Karate Federation's Hall of Fame--fills a crucial gap.
Join us on July 21 at 5:30 pm to meet Mr. Cramer and get a signed book!

Book Release - Caps, Capes, and Caring

Community

Gathering Volumes

Denise Phillips

denise@gatheringvolumes.com

Gathering Volumes is pleased to welcome the authors of "Caps, Capes, and Caring" to the store to celebrate the release.
About the Book: Between 1893 and 1999 there were eight hospital based diploma schools of nursing in Toledo: Flower Hospital School of Nursing, Maumee Valley Hospital School of Nursing, Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Riverside Hospital School of Nursing, Robinwood/St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing, St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing, Toledo Hospital School of Nursing, and Toledo State Hospital School of Nursing.
This core group of schools, operating for just over 100 years, sent registered nurses into our community to care for our sick and teach us how to stay healthy. Graduates from these schools are still among us and continue to provide care and comfort. The authors of this book have spoken to dozens of these graduates, who willingly recounted their experiences and shared precious photos. Readers will gain an appreciation of Toledo’s diploma nursing schools, and will, hopefully, experience the thrill of helping and healing, of living this life, and of learning.
Join us on Monday, May 14 at 6 pm to meet the authors and get a signed book!

Meet Newbery Medalist Katherine Applegate

Community

Gathering Volumes

Denise Phillips

denise@gatheringvolumes.com

Katherine Applegate is the author of The One and Only Ivan, winner of the Newberry Medal. Crenshaw spent over twenty weeks on the New York Times’ children’s bestseller list. Home of the Brave continues to be included on state reading lists, summer and class reading lists. With the release of her latest middle-grade novel about embracing diversity, Wishtree, local bookstore Gathering Volumes participated in Nationwide Wishing Day with a day full of activities culminating in a children’s cooking contest. Gathering Volumes’ event was deemed the most creative and Katherine Applegate is headed to Perrysburg to help celebrate.
We will start seating on Saturday, June 2 at 4:30 pm and Ms. Applegate will begin her presentation at 5 pm. After the presentation and discussion, Ms. Applegate will be available to sign books.
Ms. Applegate won the 2013 Newbery Medal for The One and Only Ivan. This annual award, granted by the American Library Association, recognizes the previous year's "most distinguished contribution to American literature for children." The story is written from the viewpoint of a gorilla living in a glass cage in a shopping mall. According to the award committee, "Katherine Applegate gives readers a unique and unforgettable gorilla's-eye-view of the world that challenges the way we look at animals and at ourselves." Her latest novel, Wishtree, is narrated by Red, an unforgettable oak tree who is many rings old. Red is the neighborhood “wish tree” – people write their wishes on pieces of cloth and tie them to Red’s branches. The animals who seek refuge in Red’s hollows help Red grant a wish for a child that moves into the neighborhood. Funny, deep, warm, and nuanced, Wishtree is Katherine Applegate at her finest, writing from the heart and from a completely unexpected point of view.
All are welcome to attend Ms. Applegate’s presentation. Anyone who wishes to have books signed by Ms. Applegate can pick up a copy of any of her books at Gathering Volumes and receive a signing line ticket. Books will also be available on the day of the event and a limited number of autographed books will be available for purchase after the event.
Once again, in celebration of Gathering Volumes Nationwide Wishing Day event, Newberry Medal winner Katherine Applegate will be speaking and signing books in Perrysburg at Gathering Volumes on Saturday, June 2. There is no charge to participate, but a signing ticket is necessary to guarantee getting (a) book(s) signed. Capsized! Book Tour

Community

Gathering Volumes

Denise Phillips

denise@gatheringvolumes.com

Gathering Volumes is pleased to welcome Patricia Sutton to the store for a special reading and discussion of her book "Capsized!" Written for Middle Graders (10 - 14 years), Kirkus Reviews calls it "A true disaster story rivetingly told."
On July 24, 1915, the SS Eastland, filled to capacity with 2,500 passengers and crew, capsized in the Chicago River while still moored to the pier. Happy picnic-goers headed for an employee outing across Lake Michigan suddenly found themselves in a struggle for their lives. Trapped below decks, crushed by the crowds attempting to escape the rising waters, or hurled into the river from the upper deck of the ship, roughly one-third of the passengers, mostly women and children, perished that day. The Eastland disaster took more passenger lives than the Titanic and stands today as the greatest loss of life on the Great Lakes. Capsized! details the events leading up to the fateful day and provides a nail-biting, minute-by-minute account of the ship's capsizing. From the courage of the survivors to the despair of families who lost loved ones, author Patricia Sutton brings to light the stories of ordinary working people enduring the unthinkable. Capsized! also raises critical-thinking questions for young readers: Why do we know so much about the Titanic's sinking yet so little about the Eastland disaster? What causes a tragedy to be forgotten and left out of society's collective memory? And what lessons from this disaster might we be able to apply today?
Capsized! releases on July 1, but you can preorder a copy here: http://gatheringvolumes.com/?q=h.tviewer&using_sb=status&qsb=keyword&qse=zeFQGxhSXoey0lfd67PWFQ

Tour of Military Graves at Woodlawn Cemetery

Toledo History Museum

Renee Jayne

419-699-1635

The Toledo History Museum will present a “Behind the Scenes History Tour” of Toledo’s historic Woodlawn Cemetery, focusing on the soldiers lot on Thursday, May 31 at 6:30. Find out the inspirational stories of some of Toledo’s finest heroes as an exploration of the final resting place for many soldiers buried within the Woodlawn’s gates takes place. Tour guide, Renee Jayne, author of the book “Toledo’s Woodlawn Cemetery,” will share her research with those in attendance.
This cemetery is considered by many to be an outdoor museum of remarkable architectural structures and a unique representation of Toledo’s economic, social, and cultural vitality and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Woodlawn’s development from a simple farm field to the serene setting it is today was inspired by the rural cemetery movement of the late 1800’s.
This event is a fundraiser for the Toledo History Museum. Members of THM can purchase tickets for this Behind the Scenes History Tour of Woodlawn Cemetery’ military section for $5.00 each and $10.00 for non-members.  To purchase tickets go to: http://www.toledohistorymuseum.org
