Lady Jacket Soccer edges past St. Ursula to clinch District Championship

A hard-fought battle entertained the faithful crowd of soccer fans last Thursday evening when the Lady Jackets edged out the St. Ursula Arrows by a score of 1-0. The single goal was scored 5 minutes into the second half, when senior Meghan Lund took the corner kick finding sophomore Sarah Pantenburg charging the goal notching a beautiful header past the Arrow goalie. The rest of the match was a give-and-take, back-and-forth by both teams, with the Jackets defending their lead, and the Arrows trying to put one in the back of the net. Both keepers had exceptional games, with Jacket sophomore keeper Lily Yoder adding another shutout – her seventh of the season. As time ran out, the Lady Jackets were able to realize their fourth straight District Championship, and have earned that honor seven of the last eight years.

The Lady Jackets’ road to the District Playoffs was an exciting trip. They finished the regular season with 11 wins, 2 losses and 3 ties, dominating their opponents with 73 goals, while only allowing 20 goals against. Leading the scoring attack was Addie Graham with 24 goals, while Kristina DeMarco lead the assists with 21. The Lady Jackets were undefeated in Northern Lakes League play, earning them the title of 2017 NLL Champions; sharing the honor with Anthony Wayne. This is the seventh straight NLL title earned by the team, 2011-2017.

This season has also produced some soccer stand-outs, with senior and team co-captain Kristina DeMarco getting the hat-trick with NLL player of the year, First Team NLL and First Team All Districts. In addition, she made the All American High School Girls soccer team and will be competing in December in Orlando, Florida. Sharing in the First Team NLL honors were junior Addie Graham and senior and co-captain Jess Bragg. Named to the Second Team NLL was sophomore Natalie Mack and Third Team NLL was sophomore Abigail Seiple, sophomore Sarah Pantenburg and sophomore Lily Yoder. Sharing the First Team All District with Kristina DeMarco was Addie Graham. Jess Bragg was named to the Second Team All District, with Natalie Mack receiving an honorable mention.

And the season is not over! Hopefully when you read this article, the Lady Jackets will have defeated the Notre Dame Eagles in the regional semi-finals, and will be preparing to meet their opponent in the Regional Finals on November 4th.
