PHS Spanish students celebrate el Día de los Muertos
Perrysburg High School students in Maggie Smith’s Spanish level 2 and level 3 classes celebrated Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with special guest Ann Hymel. Mrs. Hymel is a local artist who has educated herself about the Mexican holiday of honoring the spirits of deceased relatives. Mrs. Hymel is the owner of Fuzed Kilnformed Glass studio in Perrysburg and is a PHS parent.

Mrs. Hymel made sugar skulls for all of Maggie’s students and brought in various colors of royal icing for the students to use to decorate them. She informed the students of the importance of the sugar skulls with respect to the holiday and assisted them with their creations when necessary. Students enjoyed eating traditional Mexican foods and made other crafts during the class period, as well. Mrs. Hymel and Mrs. Smith shared information about the Ofrenda (offering table/altar) along with how the people of Oaxaca, México celebrate this sacred holiday.
